Petition to UK Government

Make employers publish salaries on all job ads

Hiding pay in job ads and asking about your previous salary is unfair and widens the gender pay gap. Tell the government to ban both in their Equal Pay consultation - it takes 30 seconds.

We call on you to:

  1. Make every employer show the pay in every job advert: a real salary or a genuine pay range, not "competitive" or "depending on experience".
  2. Ban employers and recruiters from asking what you were paid in previous jobs.

Making people jump through hoops applying for a job, only to find out it doesn't pay enough, is deeply unfair. So is asking about previous pay during salary negotiations: you should be paid what you're worth, not what you were paid before.

But even worse, there is clear evidence these practices disadvantage women and drive up the gender pay gap. In turn, that pushes many parents towards the traditional dad-breadwinner mum-homemaker roles they usually don't want, locking dads out of being present while mums become the default parent.
